Week 1 - 26 Aug 2020
Due to some reasons about applying for school, I joined the class nearly two weeks late. Fortunately, I can watched the recorded video for week 1&2 (Facebook live recorded video)to catch up the content that i missed. From the video, I learnt about 8 types of typographic system, which are axial, radial, dilatation, random, grid, modular, transitional and Bilateral.

1. Axial - All elements are organized on either side of line.
2. Radial - All elements extend from a point of focus.
3. Dilatation - All element expand from a central point in a circle fashion.
4. Random - Elements appear to have no specific relationship.
5. Grid - A system of vertical and horizontal divisions.
6. Modular - A series of non-objective elements that are constructed as standardized unit.
7. Transitional -  An informal system of layered banding.
8. Bilateral - All text is arranged symmetrically on a single axis.

Week 2 - 02 Sep 2020
I learned some common mistakes from the feedback that Mr. Vinod gave to my classmates, and I also learned from their mistakes. This week, Mr Vinod briefed us about exercise 2 (type and play). In this exercise, students need to find a photo and find the shape of letters. After that, students need to use their own creativity to turn the characteristics of the font into a real font.

Week 3 - 09 Sep 2020
Mr. Vinod gave different opinions on the design of everyone's works, but the main opinions are about the spacing or position of some fonts. Mr. Vinod encourages us to use our own photos in the exercises, and of course students are also allowed to find suitable image from the Internet.

Week 4 - 16 Sep 2020
This is Malaysia Day and it is a public holiday. In order to keep us progressing, Mr. Vinod spent more than an hour giving students feedback about exercise and introducing the next project (key artwork).

EXERCISE
 2 - Type & Play part 1

This week we also asked to do an exercise, Type and play, which mean student have to take a photo of the environment or nature and find out type. The image that i choose is a wall of brick from my house.

Fig 3.1-brick wall from garden

After some comparison, my final choice is the picture on the right above. Next, I adjusted the tone of the picture to black and white to make it easier to trace out the line.

Below is the 5 type i found out from fig 3.2,which is:

Fig 3.3-Letter M and K

Fig 3.4-Letter and A

Fig 3.5-Letter P

Fig 3.6-5 type, "A,B,M,K,P" that i trace out.

I choose a font named "BrickShapers" as my references.

Fig 3.8-This is the first sketch of letter with angles or sharp corners.

Then, i continue to refine the letter to more roundness to look more closer like a brick from the image.

Fig 3.9- Letter with a roundness shape after refined

The brick has a rough surface. I hope that this letters can show a rough effect, thus maybe add some brush strokes. Below is the process of adding stroke into letters:

 2 - Type & Play part 2

This week, we also asked for an exercise for type and image design. I have find some image that composed with dynamic type as my references.

Mr. Vinod encourage student to shoot their own photo for this project. Therefore, i choose the picture below and Fig 4.4 is the picture after edited.

FEEDBACK

-WEEK 3(9/9/2020)-
General Feedback : Update blog for week 1&2 exercise that i missed.

Specific Feedback : The elements on radial system was too heavy and eye-catching. The arrange of random system was straight and not random enough. Furthermore, the letter of b
ilateral system have to apply some kerning to improve readability. Some of typographic system is look good.

-WEEK 4(16/9/2020)-
No
specific feedback (Malaysia day)

-WEEK 5(23/9/2020)-
General Feedback : Overall is good Specific Feedback :  The sand on the font can be add more.

REFLECTIONS
__
Experiences :
Week 1 (26 AUG 2020) : For some reasons, I could not register for the school as scheduled, so I lost my class in the first and second weeks. Fortunately, I can keep up with the teaching progress through the recorded video.

Week 2 (02 SEP 2020) : In fact, this is different from what I learned before. It’s a bit difficult, and I still took some time to keep up. (So susah)

Week 3 (09 SEP 2020) :
Under the upcoming pressure of due date, I finally finished my first exercise, and this week is also the first time I met Mr. Vinod on online class and asked him for advice (I'm so nervous)

Week 4 (16 SEP 2020) : It’s Malaysia Day. But there will be a feedback session for 1 hour.

Week 5 (23 SEP 2020) : The most pleasant thing is to hear "ok, good." At least comfort my hard work staying up all night.

Observations :

Week 2 (02 SEP 2020) :  I find it very convenient to provide recorded instructional videos, and I can review a few times if I don’t understand.

Week 3 (09 SEP 2020) : In the process, I encountered obstacles like the wrong font chosen. I also realized that some elements are too heavy and make the work look messy and unbalanced.

Week 4 (16 SEP 2020) : Hearing feedback from others is also very helpful, because we can know the same error early and correct it in time.

Week 5 (23 SEP 2020) : In order to avoid making the same mistake, I pay more attention to the details. There is pressure to make progress. This is what I can summarize.

Findings
This is the first time I use blog, because I used Behance before, so I am a little unfamiliar with blog operation. Based on the reference provided by Mr. Vinod, I found the blog design style I like. I have to deal with the problem of time management well, because without those two weeks, I must complete almost three weeks of practice at the same time. But in the end I finished it on time. My favorite exercise is exercise 2 (typing and playing), it is a very interesting job. This assignment is very helpful for us to use our imagination to find various fonts. I appreciate it very much.
