Project 1a- Key artwork

LECTURES
_
Week 4 - 16 Sep 2020
Today is Malaysia Day, so there is no official course. But today, Mr. Vinod took the time to introduce Project 1A. This project needs to use the title to produce key artworks.

Week 5 - 23 Sep 2020
Class starts with Mr. Vinod giving us feedbacks for key artwork. Most people make the same mistake by starting to color without first making a black and white version. And most people’s key artwork is commented as a poster, not a key artwork.

Week 6 - 30 Sep 2020
This week also started with Mr. Vinod’s comments on the students’ works. Many students’ key artwork has been successfully progressing in progress. Mr. Vinod said that students who are behind schedule can investigate and find more information from the Internet or books to better understand the direction of the theme design.

Week 7 - 07 Oct 2020
After the feedback session ended, Mr. Vinod explained to the students the content of project 1b (collateral). Students need to make e-invitation, which is an animation, and other related products such as id card, t-shirt, tote bag and more.

INSTRUCTION

PROJECT
_
Week 4 - 16 Sep 2020

We are tasked to create a key artwork with combined of  visual and type.
Students need to choose between the three event titles mentioned in the Typographic Systems (Exercises).

All Ripped Up: Punk Influences on Design
or
The ABCs of Bauhaus Design Theory
or
Russian Constructivism and Graphic Design

*Collateral: Poster (Static 50 x 70 cm), Invite (interactive), T-Shirt, Sticker, Pin Badge, etc. I decided to do "The ABCs of Bauhaus Design Theory", and i did some research about it.

Fig 1.1 Video: Bauhaus Design: Everything you need to know in 50 seconds

Following this video, I knew that there are 4 principles of Bauhaus, which are:

1)F
orm follows function
2)industry drives innovation
3)art and technology are united
4)Artistic disciplines are connected

Refer to this book, i decided to use triangle, square and circle as my element in my key artwork.

Week 5 - 23 Sep 2020

This is the first draft I made, but it is more like a Poster than a key artwork. And a correct key artwork does not need to be filled with color, it is in black and white version. Therefore, I did it again A design uses fonts to represent the key artwork. But Mr Vinod's opinion is that the reason why the key artwork does not work is because outsiders cannot understand the title, especially the ABC in the font design.

Week 6 - 30 Sep 2020

After Mr. vinod's feeback, I realized that this is a bad work, not even a key artwork. So i do out more draf. This time, I found more information about Bauhaus through the Internet, and even has works involving various aspects of design, such as chairs, light bulbs, etc. I found that these may all be part of my key artwork, so I use the shape of the object to create my key artwork

Under Mr. Vinod’s comment, I was asked to modify a key artwork with a lamp. Maybe it still has a chance to become a key artwork under other works that don’t work. Mr. Vinod suggested that the lines should be more naturally integrated with the font, which may look better. And the lamp should also be replaced with a more graphic style instead of real photos. Therefore, the picture below is the result of my modification based on Mr. Vinod's suggestion.

Week 7 - 7 Oct 2020

This week we should prepare for the key artwork poster so the key artwork has reached the stage of coloring. Mr. Vinod's comments on keyartwork may be a bit more colorful, but in general it is still work.

FEEDBACKS
_
Week 5 - 23 Sep 2020

General Feedback:

Mr. Vinod said that my work is not working, because it looks more like a poster than a key artwork.

Specific Feedback:
Everything needs to done in black and white version. Mr Vinod still said it was not working, because couldn't see that it was a letter, especially ABC. The ABC’s font design is completely infeasible and invisible, and brings very vague information.

Week 6 - 30 Sep 2020

General Feedback:
Three of these drafts do not work as a key artwork.

Specific Feedback:
One of the drafts with a lamp is indicated by Mr. Vinod that it may become a key artwork after modification. Mr. Vinod also gave his opinion that the lines of the lamp can be modified to blend with the font more naturally. The lamp should be in more graphic style not just a real photo. The A look not working in this artwork.

Week 7 - 7 Oct 2020

General Feedback:
A bit colorful but it still work and overall is good.

Specific Feedback:
Hope there are more elements that can be linked with the lights, such as some curves, etc. Layout is interesting.

Week 8 - 14 Oct 2020

General Feedback:
Animation is fine.

Specific Feedback:
Textual information in the animation is too small, and is not readable on mobile device.

REFLECTIONS
__
Experiences:
Week 4 (16 Sep 2020): After thinking about it, I decided to choose a title related to Bauhaus that I am less familiar with. The simple but detailed Bauhaus design made me understand that this is a challenge for me who likes to exaggerated design.

Week 5 (23 Sep 2020):
I failed. At that time, I didn't know how to design key artwork instead of posters.

Week 6 (30 Sep 2020):
I am very disappointed with the works I stayed up late to design, almost none of them are working. II am very happy when I heard Mr. Vinod said that one of my favorite works has a chance to be modified, and it may become a key artwork. After several strict revisions, I really like this key work, it looks more quality than the previous work

Observations:
Week 4 (16 Sep 2020): I may still not understand or misunderstanding about what key artwork is, so all my works are commented that it is a poster more than a key artwork. Thus, i keep do research on internet like Pinterest, google and Behance to find out more idea inspiration.

Week 5 (23 Sep 2020): I find it difficult for me to adapt to simple designs, because maybe my previous Intern was a wedding company and they all yearn for complicated designs.

Week 6 (30 Sep 2020): Obviously, I think the quality of my design has improved a lot in a short period of time compared to the beginning.

Findings
In fact, I have not been very interested in typography, but after this project I found that it is actually quite fun. Mr. Vinod’s opinions are actually very direct to the point. I found that this can not only take care of the details of the work but also improve the quality of the work.

FURTHER READINGS
_
This is an article I found on the Internet, which gave me a basic understanding of the history of bauhuas design. This article also provides a lot of graphics and text to let readers understand the content more clearly. At the same time the author also provides a few Doctor's comment on Bauhuas.
