INSTRUCTION

Project 1b
_
Week 6 - 30 Sep 2020
Students are required to provide a series of collateral this week, including posters and e-invitation. Students need to choose the other three collaterals. Before using these attached items, students must first design a poster and then make an e-invitation. Therefore, I first produced the first draft of the poster design.

Poster
I have made several drafts and tried several colors. But I think these posters are not very effective. So I continue to look for references related to the topic on the Internet.
When I was looking for some references on the Internet, I found these two posters that I like. They all have one thing in common, they are simple but can successfully bring out the theme of bauhaus in the shape. I think the lines are handled very well in the poster, and I was thinking about incorporating the idea of this line into my poster design.

After getting more inspiration, I designed two. I decided to let Mr. Vinod choose from among them, and choose one of them to become the official poster.

The comments that Mr. Vinod gave to everyone, the information in the poster must be related to the key artwork, and they can interact with each other. When I only presented the second draft poster to the lecturer, Mr. Vinod chose the second and gave a comment about that the poster and key artwork can be more related.

Week 7 - 7 Oct 2020
After thinking about it, I decided to associate it with the lamp. I think it would be a good way to display the lamp in the key artwork on the poster. According to Mr. Vinod’s feedback, some shapes and lines have been added to the lamp.

E-invitation
After the poster was finalized, I started to design the e-invitation. This e-invitation needs to be placed in a 1000px x 1000px format. I found out because this size does not match the size of the poster, I need to tweak some about the design layout.

Week 8 - 14 Oct 2020
For this e-invitation, Mr. Vinod's comment is the same as most students, which is the font too small. "Textual information in the animation is too small, and is not readable on mobile device. Most of you access social media and websites on your phones thus the challenge in the animated invite is not just the animation but the format too, which means desktop and mobile device." Mr. Vinod said.

While modifying the font, I found out that I can’t just enlarge the font, because the enlarged font will be out of range. This will affect the content invisible, so I must find another solution to solve the font size and placement problem. Finally I decided to replace the horizontal line with text information, the text information will be available to be see.

Collaterals
After the poster was confirmed, there was no big problem with E-invitation. I started to try to design collaterals, and bellow was the collaterals that I chose :
1)
Tote bag,
2) T-shirt,
3) Sticker tapes.
I hope to design a simple collaterals that can be found at a glance that this design is related to the key artwork and can also bring out the content. So I spent a lot of time on designing, especially on tote bags, I drew a few drafts and made many attempts.

However, I didn’t feel good about this draft, so I asked my friends for their opinions. After discussion and opinions with friends, I changed part of the placement and design. Below was the second draft, also the draft that I shown Mr. Vinod:

Week 9 - 14 Oct 2020
Mr. Vinod praised the idea of tote bag, but he hoped that some shining light or some text information could be added to the space under the light. The lecturer also suggested that the other side of the tote bag also needs to be presented. So I made changes to the second draft of tote bag, I added "open public lecture" and "design school" under the lights, and also added the other side of the tote bag as well.

REFLECTIONS
__
Experiences:
Week 6 (30 Sep 2020): I did some scary designs, but after finding the right reference, I finally got a better design.
Week 7 (7 Oct 2020): I am very happy that the lecturer will like this layout, and he also praised it as quite interesting.
Week 8 (14 Oct 2020): The lecturer reminded me of a big problem, I really didn’t notice that fonts are completely unworkable on mobile devices.
Week 9 (21 Oct 2020): It's another pleasant day. The lecturer is very optimistic about the idea of tote bag, and I also like this work. The lecturer mentioned one thing that I have felt losing some of the part of this work, that is adding some designs under the lights, it looks like it will not be out of space.

Observations:
Week 7 (7 Oct 2020): Refer to the work of other designers, which is the fastest and most effective way to improve your design in your own learning.
Week 8 (14 Oct 2020): Due to font size issues, this e-invitation is completely infeasible on mobile devices. I must pay more attention to these problems in the future, and prevent it from happening.
Week 9 (21 Oct 2020): I think a simple design that brings out the content is a good design. But in this way, I still don’t seem to be strong enough.

Findings
I really like the work this time. After this project, my knowledge of Bauhaus has increased a lot. I found that many designs in real life are related to Bauhaus. Now I discovered that there is a Bauhaus design of lights are almost all around our daily lives. Through these objects in real life, it also brought me some inspiration such as hanging lights. The design brings a lot of convenience and beauty.

FURTHER READINGS

This is a video I learned before I started working on collateral design. In it, the author mentioned many methods and techniques to connect your design with collateral. One of the most useful points is to stick with your branded color palette . Use a similar element over and over, people will be able to recognize it.
