WEEK 1 TO WEEK 3 - 27/08/2021 - 06/09/2021

BOUNCING BALL

Mr. Kannan gave a brief introduction to the students about this subject and what we are going to do this semester. The student will have been tasked with a few exercises, project 1, project 2, and the final project. Mr. Kannan also lectured about bouncing ball in three different weight of the ball, which is ping pong, bowling, and basketball. According to Mr. Kannan's teaching, I was first familiar with some basic animation operations in Maya. After understanding the basic operation, I started to plan the speed of the bouncing ball, and below is the bouncing ball without design:

Fig 1.1 Ping pong
Fig 1.2 Bowling
Fig 1.3 Football
Then I put the color and materials on it:
Fig 1.4 Ping pong with color
Fig 1.5 Bowling with color
Fig 1.6 Football with color

FEEDBACK:
-Add slow in slow out
-Can see the squash and stretch on ping pong ball
-Football is too fast, maybe add more frame between it

Thus, I revised the animation following to the advice from Mr Kannan. Below is the revised version:
Fig 1.7 Revised ping pong
Fig 1.8 Revised bowling
Fig 1.9 Revised football

REFLECTION:
I found that this homework used my knowledge of the last 2d animation, such as squash and stretch. In contrast, I think 3d is more difficult and more challenging than 2d. Because 2d is drawn by yourself, but 3d is more to estimate by yourself (if you don’t need an accurate angle). Although there was a little confusion in the process, under the guidance of Mr Kannan, I began to understand the operation of 3D animation.

WEEK 3 TO WEEK 5 - 06/09/2021 - 20/09/2021

WALKER

This week, students need to do a walk cycle about the characters. According to the character of the character, the way of walking will be different. For this exercise, I just imagine a person walking with a little joy. The following is the working process:

Fig 2 Draft 1
Fig 2.1 Side draft 1
FEEDBACK:
-It’s not like walking from a human perspective (Mr. Kannan demonstrates) a little forward-leaning
-The footboard needs to work on again
-The angle of the knee is wrong and it is broken

Fig 2.2 knee part is broken
Thus, I revised based on Mr Kannan's feedback:

Fig 2.4 Walker "jump up" pose
Fig 2.5 Walker walk pose
Fig 2.6 Walk cycle view 1

Fig 2.7 Walk cycle view 2
REFLECTION:
This exercise was really challenging because I kept breaking the characters' feet during the production process. I am very happy that I can successfully make a normal walk cycle in the end.

WEEK 5 TO WEEK 6 - 20/09/2021 - 27/09/2021

CAR RIG

For this exercise, I used the previous 3D car model, Scarlett. Based on Mr. Kannan’s lecturer, I put a rig and controller on the car.

Fig 3.2 Car control-Steering wheel 2

Fig 3.3 Car control draft 1

Fig 3.4 Car control draft 1 front view
FEEDBACK:
-too fast cannot see
-but can see steering control work well
-Overall is okay just the timing

Thus, I revised based on Mr Kannan's feedback:

Fig 3.5 Car control top view draft 2
Fig 3.6 Car control right view draft 2
Fig 3.7 Car control front view draft 2
REFLECTION:
I think this exercise is fun, especially when the car starts to walk, I learn to use ‘Parent’ to solve all problems.

WEEK 7 - 04/10/2021

EXPRESSION AND ACTING

Mr Kannan provided some 3d models in the Microsoft Team. I used a human head model to roughly understand how to manipulate facial expressions. I learned to use the mirror effect to achieve consistent movement, and also learned to use paint skin weight.
Fig 4 Self-exercise

Then I used the voice at the previous sem, called I HATE THIS JOB. Below is the progression of face expression:
Fig 4.1 Draft 1
Fig 4.2 Draft 1 front view
FEEDBACK:
-NEVER DO THE PERSON MOVE LIKE THAT, HUMAN NEVER MOVE LIKE THAT
-NOT ROBOT HAND, HUMAN HAND ALWAYS IN RELAX MODE

Thus, I revised based on Mr Kannan's feedback:
Fig 4.3 Face expression draft 2
REFLECTION:
This exercise let me know that details are important, so I also added a backswing to the model. I also found the joy of those controllers to move the face shape of the model.
